Opties
I don’t think it’s controversial to say that the film’s whimper of a final scene is anything resembling catharsis, let alone shock or in-your-face punk. Recensie
Pellerin and Madekwe are both more than capable in their roles, and it is enjoyable enough to see the two interact. But Lurker misses something about the celebrity-fan relationship. Recensie
It particularly does not make sense to me here, where it is in conjunction with the grimier aspects of contemporary middle America. $POSITIONS is at best unfocused in its pursuit of some meaningful conception of financial dire straits. Recensie
Birney’s film is a light, charming affair. But it isn’t saccharine. There is some needling imagery that gets under the skin, and there is a darker side to the character’s hermitage that opens the door to the potential for a less happy ending. Recensie
Reece’s senses of humor and style remain at the forefront, and they make the film nothing less than watchable. It doesn’t hurt, too, that a very capable cast is here to channel this humor and personality. Recensie
In the absence of character depth, we are left solely with the pleasing aesthetic. Recensie
What elevates Hellcat more than anything else are the small cast of performers. Gorman is obviously the standout, as she carries over three quarters of the screentime. And Terry, whose character is initially presented as fairly one-note, brings a decent amount of gravitas to the role. Recensie
Z-Grade Director is a light and lighthearted film that is difficult to dislike. By that same token, the lack of meaningful conflict or the heightening of stakes leaves something to be desired in the central relationship. Recensie
To their credit: the film looks amazing. Mileage will vary when it comes to the limited scope of the story. Recensie
Seeing one that attempts truly broad comedy within the framing of an original horror conceit is refreshing. And while the storytelling lacks the requisite depth needed to keep the whole thing hanging together, discrete instances of comedy work just fine. Recensie
It is a bit of a shame that such an exuberant franchise ends on such a flat note. Recensie
Friendship does it better than most. Some may call it the feel-bad comedy of the year, but I felt pretty good coming out of it. Recensie
Fun though the set pieces are, the gaps between them are long and arduous. Recensie
The best part of this final (until now) film in the series is that it actually attempts to do something new and interesting with its central conceit. Recensie
This fourth film is the nadir of a franchise that is already fairly mediocre. The script is pure idiocy. The computer effects look horrendous. And the selling point of the franchise, the horror movie kills, are in such desperate need of any creative juice that they are embarrassing. Recensie
The series fully embraces the comedy of its central premise. The set pieces are adequately tense, but they also are overtly humorous. Recensie
Final Destination 2 provides a similar level of entertainment value as the first film. It is an inferior sequel, but anyone enjoying the first film will likely find enough to enjoy here, too. Recensie
The first film in this franchise has good moments and a funny premise. It jump-started a franchise with more downs than ups, but in isolation it is a nice little artifact of Y2K horror. Recensie
Aside from Ford, the acting is fine and the writing is hackneyed. Nothing new under the sun. But hey, at least there’s a bunch of punchy punches and stabby stabs! Recensie
Given Todd Haynes already skillfully deconstructed the enigma of celebrity in his kaleidoscopic Dylan film I’m Not There, A Complete Unknown looks all the more boilerplate and skin-deep by comparison. Recensie
Carry-On does just enough legwork to make the film entertaining and watchable. Recensie
The selling point becomes gross-out comedy, but the truth is it’s not all that funny. Recensie
The two performances at the center of this, from relative unknowns Aura and Ventura, are both very good. And the original songs made for the film all do their job in enhancing the period-specific sonic landscapes on display. Recensie
Girl Internet Show: A Kati Kelli Mixtape adequately curates the experience of this satire and aesthetic. Beyond bringing attention to the underseen artist, though, the film does little to justify its own place. Recensie
