Even though these comedic elements may feel tonally inconsistent with other elements in the film series, I still thought it helped to make Dan Trachtenberg’s Predator: Badlands the effective and highly entertaining sci-fi action flick that it is. Review

While I was a big fan of Bring Her Back, I do think it would be interesting to see them work on something that challenges them a little bit more in the future. Review

The moments of excellent filmmaking in Kathryn Bigelow’s highly anticipated comeback are ultimately drowned out by an unwise structure and an ending that is not quite as thought-provoking as it is unfulfilling. Review

A little bit rougher and messier than the rock-solid first film, but it has its moments. Review

Joachim Rønning’s Tron: Ares felt like a step in the wrong direction for the franchise due to it lacking enough of connective tissue, its dreadful writing, forgettable characters, and uneven tone. But it is still a decent time at the movies, if you’re just going in for an audiovisual experience rather than a ‘good film.’... Review

Anders Thomas Jensen’s The Last Viking is yet another all-round effective Danish black comedy. Review

I found myself a step ahead of the film more often than not, which isn’t ideal for this subgenre of films. Add to that the climax’s over-the-top elements and the paper-thin characters, and what you’re left with is a nice-looking and well-cast but extremely predictable and underwhelming B-movie whodunnit. It paints the picture of someone who left us way too soon, but whose comedic stylings started a wave of comedy that influenced others, that warmed millions, and that we absolutely shouldn’t forget. I highly recommend it to cinephiles everywhere. Review

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another is an electrifying jolt to the senses; it is a complex thrill ride that gets the most out of its stellar cast, and it is a political call to arms that seeks to bridge the gap between generations and pass the torch to future generations so as to ensure they can carry on the fight, while learning from mistakes. Although it certainly does have thriller elements that are gripping, Lee has also infused the film with so many quirks that make it a hard pill to swallow. Review

The film lacks the visual dynamism, consistent laughs, and memorable, colorful characters that may have been able to outweigh the film’s pacing issues and tonal shifts that sometimes grind the film to a halt. Review

It’s the irresistible charms and epic but intense violence, as well as the colorful characters, that really make this so entertaining. Review

It is tonally agile, wears its inspirations on its sleeves, but feels like a wholly original work, and has one of the craziest climaxes of any film this year in large part due to the film’s confident and genre-bending visual language. Review

It is miscast, poorly written, features a pretty significant screenlife plot hole, has an entirely unconvincing lead performance, features unpolished or downright shoddy visual effects, and is, clearly, designed to be one big ad for the products on screen and, especially, Amazon delivery. Review

It is, undoubtedly, one of the funniest films of the year that, notably, has a relatively brisk pace and really fun end credits bits. Here you have screen legends skillfully delivering joke after joke after joke, and the film doesn’t outstay its welcome. Review

Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns is a confusing hodgepodge of modern updates and fealty to the original films that, strangely, also has borderline character-staining moments, odd visual updates, and a frustrating lack of action. It is an overlong, slightly tedious superhero film that needs an energy boost of action. Review

It succeeds partly thanks to its loving approach to the characters, the era of comic books that spawned them, and its creators, but it is also just an audiovisual feast with great sci-fi exploration, outstanding production design, and instantly iconic music. Review

Although it is built on an intriguing premise and even though it strikes a better tone than the previous film, Sidney J. Furie’s Superman IV: The Quest for Peace fails to tackle its ideas with the kind of weight they merit. Review

Most of the film is paced extraordinarily well, the film features ‘all-timer’ performances, strong visual effects for its era, and it skillfully laid the foundation for the future of the superhero subgenre films to come. Oh, and it also just leaves you in such a good mood. Review

I Know What You Did Last Summer is an uninspired, unoriginal, and borderline legacy-staining modern follow-up to the Kevin Williamson original. It is tonally uneven, trite, and features hackneyed, lazy, or flippant dialogue. Review
