John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

In a hyper-stylized movie that prioritizes adrenaline-pumping action above everything else, there’s no room for narratives nor logic. That said, it’s still a fun experience to see Keanu Reeves in his element, doing what he does best.

Long Shot

Despite the flaws, I find myself enjoying the movie for the most part. There are some predictable beats and over-the-top scenes, but Levine managed to keep the movie engaging throughout.

Avengers: Endgame

The film is an artistic and technical marvel. The set pieces are great, which is to be expected for a film of this scale. Alan Silvestri, the original composer of The Avengers, delivers rousing music with his iconic score, but it also sounds perfectly melancholy when it needs to be. What a bittersweet and worthy send-off for a bunch of beloved characters.

Red Joan

It’s one of those movies that was entertaining enough because of the cast, but in the end I can’t help wonder what it could’ve been.

Pet Sematary

As a horror film, Pet Sematary works quite well. But it is the idea in King’s story that really makes it horrifying at a deep archetypical level.

But as a feel-good family film, I think it’s still pretty enjoyable. Is this movie necessary? Well no, but neither is any of the live action adaptations Disney’s been making.

Hotel Mumbai

Indeed a grim and unflinchingly-tense film that shows the triumph of human spirits and acts of heroism by regular people.

Poster for Shazam!

In the end, I enjoyed it for the most part despite the overly bombastic action finale that somehow many DC movies can’t avoid, and other flaws I mentioned.

Wind River

The desolate setting here is a character in itself, in which the location is pivotal to the story. It’s a bleak film to be sure, but a deeply engrossing one and it’s not without hope.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

What I like most about this movie is the way the story unfolds. I actually like the deliberate, almost unhurried pace, but every moment is never without a sense of dread.

So while this movie has its moments, it just wasn’t the trailblazing movie I expected to introduce such a powerful super-heroine.

Triple Frontier

The cinematography by Roman Vasyanov is quite stunning, especially when they get to the Andes mountains. The ensemble cast and taut script makes this a journey worth taking.

The Little Mermaid

I still very much enjoy The Little Mermaid, despite some of its narrative problems I mentioned above. It’s certainly a gorgeous movie and rewatching it was a pretty satisfying walk down memory lane.

It’s definitely one of the most fun and most satisfying animated fantasy adventure with a stirring message of friendship, family and loyalty.

Alita: Battle Angel

Just don’t expect a sci-fi classic or even something emotionally gratifying, just enjoy the ride for the high-octane action adventure that it is.

Despite its flaws though, props to Gilroy for his creativity and taking us to a world rarely depicted on screen.

Howards End

Overall I think the cast is really strong however, esp. the mesmerizing Hayley Atwell. As much as I’m a big fan of romantic period dramas, I also appreciate the fact that they downplay the romance here. Instead it’s more of a character study and astute commentary of social themes of the time...

A Christmas Prince

A Christmas Prince does have that warm & fuzzy quality if you’re willing to accept it for what it is. Incredulous, extremely predictable and even a little insipid, yes, but it’s also kind of sweet with its own kind of charm.
