Wie de historie een beetje kent komt al snel tot de ontdekking dat Roland Emmerich’s oorlogsfilm niet waarheidsgetrouw is. Dat neemt niet weg dat Emmerich het opnieuw presteert om het publiek een visueel spektakel voor te schotelen. Dat enorm vermakelijk is en aansluiting vindt bij zijn eerdere kaskrakers.

Midway is een typische Hollywood film. Zo krijgt elk personage maar één karakteristiek en daarmee moeten ze het doen. De arrogante piloot, de bange nieuweling, de dappere soldaat, etc. Het is duidelijk dat Emmerich een voorkeur heeft voor spektakel, iets wat prima past bij één van zijn bombastische rampenfilms, maar deze aanpak is niet geschikt voor dit waargebeurde oorlogsverhaal.
