Despite the intermittent tragedies, the ending is powerfully heartfelt, smartly repeating an artistic motif that ties up the whole mixed-up storyline. Review

Part heist, part thriller, part road movie, part buddy-cop chuckler, part actioner, part crime caper, part murder-mystery, and part romantic comedy – with a number of other elements sprinkled on top – Silver Streak moves swiftly and unpredictably, keeping up the amusement even with its overlong running time and the steady diminishment of jokes in favor of heightening suspense. Yet there’s also an eerie beauty to the picture, chiefly in the scenery and marginally in the premise, during which few decisions trump coming to the aid of a damsel in distress. Review

The running time is a touch too long, spreading the laughs thinner for the sake of drama and inevitable confrontations, but it creates an opportunity for a heavy-hitting revelation – and eventual reversal. Review

Keeping in line with standard sci-fi monster movies, human villains tend to be just as repulsive as the otherworldly intruder; antagonists are quick to sacrifice lives in the name of science. This is made more potent by excellent acting and an adherence to apposite severity; here, there’s no time for levity. Review

There’s a lot of beauty to be found in the almost random, unfocused imagery and atmosphere. Review

Every time the action gets going, demonstrating a knack for modern choreography, the intrusive soundtrack kicks in, distracting with a pitifully incompatible lineup of popular tunes, which induces cringes rather than awe. Review

When the focus is on romantic comedy, the film is breezy and amusing; but when it switches to dramas involving fundraising and campaigning and clashes for political gain, it grows stickier, since it doesn’t approach these topics with sincerity. Review

The dialogue is also superb, bringing these relatable characters and their grounded situations an extraordinary sense of authenticity and hilarity – even when they’re caught in awkward moments that could only ever happen in the movies. Review

In the end, the drama is poignant, the comedy scenarios are effective, and the romance airy (if totally farfetched); it’s not exceptional, but it’s thoroughly entertaining. Review

It could all have been more effective if it was either much severer or much sillier. At least the music is snazzy and chirpy. Review
